“Ngiam was the first composer I’ve ever worked with, and he made the entire experience incredibly smooth and approachable. I had no prior experience collaborating with a composer or much knowledge about music production, but he made the workflow easy to understand from the start. He communicated clearly, guided me through the process, and was able to translate my ideas into something far more detailed and refined after I explained the direction and emotions I wanted to achieve.
What stood out to me most was not just the quality of his compositions, but also his professionalism and work ethic. He consistently kept me updated on his progress, shared new ideas and revisions proactively, and regularly checked in to better understand the creative approach I had in mind. His turnaround time was also impressively fast without compromising the quality of the work.
For this particular project, the score involved elements inspired by Indian classical instrumentation. Although Ngiam mentioned that this was an area he was still exploring and not something he specialised in fully, I genuinely appreciated his openness and willingness to experiment. Through his constant communication, attention to detail, and dedication to the craft, he created a simple yet highly effective piece that elevated my short film tremendously. His patience in understanding my vision and commitment to bringing it to life meant a lot to me.
Another aspect I appreciated about working with Ngiam was how prepared he always was during discussions. Even when we already had a direction in mind, he would come in with alternative ideas and creative approaches for me to consider. That openness not only gave me new perspectives, but also helped push earlier ideas further and develop them into something stronger.
Overall, working with Ngiam was an enjoyable and reassuring experience. I would highly recommend him, especially to filmmakers or creatives who are collaborating with a composer for the first time. He makes the entire process feel far less intimidating while still delivering work of a very high standard.”
